How to Negotiate Salary Package
with an interviewer what my salary expectations are? This is a question I have
a difficult time answering. I have a second interview with a big FMCG coming up
soon and I know they will ask me about my salary expectations, but I do not
know what amount to ask for. The job advertisement stated excellent pay and
benefits but how do I know if I am asking for too much or too little?
Some people get very uncomfortable by salary negotiations.
Basically they tend to fear coming across as too needy or too greedy. If you
have similar concerns, then just be aware that salary negotiations are a
standard part of the hiring process, and, as with all things, the more you do
it the better you get at it.
Try to avoid discussing salary during the interview stage.
If you discuss salary and benefits before the decision has been made to hire
you, you risk not getting the offer at all. However, if the interviewer corners
you and demands that you name your price, then do not give one specific amount,
like 50, 000 rupees, but put forth a salary range with your desired salary at
the lower end of the range, e.g. 50,000 to 60, 000 rupees. Better yet, get the
interviewer to throw the first number on the tale. Why? Because if you are too
low they will get you too cheaply and if you are too high you just might knock
yourself out of being considered for the job.
The company's initial offer will be a good ball park figure
to work your negotiation around. Just keep in mind that you are negotiating,
not demanding, more money. The process is meant to be an open discussion
between both sides, with room for give and take. In fact, may organizations
expect you to negotiate and they factor that into their initial offer.
Lastly, almost everyone in life sooner or later goes to
negotiate salary package with ones employer. It is therefore, imperative to
negotiate expertly at that time. You must believe in yourself. Keep your aim
high and be realistic. Start your negotiations with confidence and in good tone.
Whatever your interests are, clarify them. It is easier to convince someone to
accept your suggestion if he perceives how the proposal is determinedly placed
on objective criteria. Remember just like you, the employer has also some
requirements and apprehension. To convince him to agree with your salary
package you will have to answer all those things that are his requirements.
